ABOUT EL YUNQUE NATIONAL FOREST
Our explorer Raul spent 21 days deep in the forest with the Nikon camera on hand.
These exploration were not easy - the terrain is dangerous and uneven - every step a new danger and a marvel. The recorded humidity was 99% every day. It was basically a high altitude swamp. The boulders are exposed by the erosion of the rainfal of El Yunque here which is 200 inches a year in 10,000 rains dispersed all year around.
This is the top part of the 28,000 acres forest preserved by the Taino Indians, then Spain then the USA. Then it became a part of the USFS. We focused on the top part that has been untouched for ages. We have to make our own trail but started from the Tradewinds Trail close to the Espiritu Santo river.
He recorded marvels in the early Holy Spirit River (Rio Espiritu Santo) from its very beginnings to a fully formed beautiful river. But this was before Hurricane Maria decimated the forest canopy in 2015 - these images are historic. We have enhanced them using the CCMM techiniques preserving the originals and making many details much more clear, but without any distortion or changes - just an enhancement of the real colors.
