EYNF - El Yunque National Forest - the only tropical forest in the US Park system - Puerto Rico. Here it can rain up to 200 inches a year. It is located an hour from San Juan via Rout 66.

The Canvas Image - Awesome View from Los Tres Picachos:

A couple years before Hurricane Maria decimated the rainforest thick canopy (visible on the mountains). I took this photo from the 3,175 feet tall Tres Picachos (The Three small Peaks) in El Yunque peak range.

A little known place, with a very small wall, out of the way off El Yunque Trail. The date of the image is recorded on the side of the canvas - a truly historic image for El Yunque and PR before Hurricane Maria - on Sept 20, 2017, 140 mph winds for 12 hours. It has the best views of the region … but so little known! The leaf on top is from a Yagrumo tree. The ocean is the Atlantic coast.

History:

El Yunque, officially named 'El Yunque National Forest'

(EYNF) is located in northeastern Puerto Rico.

It is the only tropical rainforest in the US National

Park System (NPS) and is managed by the US Forest Service.

It covers a surface of 28,430 acres (115 km2).

It is the largest forest in Puerto Rico.

EYNF was stablished in 1903 by the beginning USFS,

but initially it was set aside in 1876 by King Alfonso XII

of Spain and represents one of the oldest reserves in the

Western Hemisphere. Before that it was revered by the

Taino Indians as a Holy land as 'Yuke'or white land.
