Every park has it's deep secrets - and TuolumneMeadows is one of Yosemite secret places.
While most go to the lower sections near the half dome, here you take road 120 or Tioga road.
Tioga Pass (el. 9,943 ft. / 3,031 m.) is a mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada of California. State Route 120 runs through it, and serves as the eastern entry point for Yosemite National Park, at the Tioga Pass Entrance Station. It is the highest highway pass in California and in the Sierra Nevada.
This is a very long and amazing road - a whole day adventure. At the end we encounter the sign of the highest road of California - close to Mt Dana - a 2-3 hour walking distance to the top.
But on the way there are many.spots you can park and are just next to the rocky peaks - just like this photo.The amazing fact is that you can then get out of the car and in only 15 minutes reach a peak and see these views. The trees are like bonsai - growing in the granite. There are many signs of huge ancient glaciers. The road is closed in winter - and is cool in summer.

Yosemite park changed America in many ways. It was the big LOVE of John Muir, masterly documented by him in the famous book - 'A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf' written in 1867.
This was the inspiration of many other books and sayings that supported the creation of the NPS in 1916, and the Sierra Club he founded and directed in 1892 to his end - an organization created to "explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth".

At the end of the book he writes a incredibly poetic story of how he fell in love with Yosemite. Of course after a 1,000 mile walk and almost dying of illness in Florida, he is now a totally different person from the botanist that started the long and brave walk just after the civil war. I strongly recommend this book to understand him.
