Holy Spirit River deep-forest explorations - El Yunque rainforest Puerto Rico.

An awesome formation about 40 mins from the main camp near Tradewinds.
This is a huge landslide, we are behind it in a huge boulders formation, just after the muddy
landslide to the right - not visible here. The small river flows underground the rocks and sand.
It's an impassable section - a clever path allowed me to cross it. There are several B&W versions.
All the rocks are green due to moss and fog and a lot of rain. Sierra palms are in the foreground.

Horizontal Framed Premium Gallery Wrap Canvas - Holy Spirit River explorations - 2015.

Weather: 70-80F, 99% humidity, 200 inches a year, 100 Billion gallons of rain per year

These images are a set from over 20 days living in the forest in about 2 years of explorations.

The aim was to find a lost trail that led most of the way into the birth of Rio Espiritu Santo. I has travelled this trail many times in the 1970's but it was lost in a landslide in the 14 km Tradewinds trail. The river and most of the trail is designated as a US Federal national protected area by law.

This trail was for scientific research in the 1960-1980's in El Yunque, where a nuclear device was planted (not here, but in El Verde) to study the effects of radiation on the forest ecosystems  … and a planned creation of a canal quickly via nuclear bombs in Nicaragua - but this a long story...

In summary after about 20 days we (I was with my son Jose then) found the trail - how excited I was! 20-days of searching in such a muddy and dense forest - I survived many dangers...mostly alone. The trail was a eroded a lot by the 200 inches or rain here...its boulders were rounded!
I then used the trail to go further, since the river itself became impassable due to trunks etc.

Here I document, in an historic set of images, of the deep forest BEFORE Hurricane Maria in 9/20/2017 - were the forest canopy was decimated by 140 MPH winds for 12 hrs.
It will take now several decades, assuming no hurricane hits PR again, to recover as it was here.

Details: the river moves slowly, its mostly flat, and most trees seen are Sierra Palms.
The forest is dark and deep, no more the case after the hurricane... The orange color is due to decomposition. White long objects are usually Sierra Palm new branch covers. The forest has over 250 species of trees, far more than US forests. This is were dinosaurs lived... it is ancient and preserved for millions of years … and can even survive hurricanes!

Copyright: Raul E Garcia - 2014 to 2015
Camera: Nikon D3300, full resolution, 24MP - mostly 2014-2015.
All scenes are intact - nothing was changed.

Formats: By special order these images can be printed in larger canvas or metallic prints.

Pricing: The pricing for this set is less than others in this collection because one or more of these reasons below:

1-There is sunlight in the place at the time of the image - this brings contrasts that reduce clarity.
2-The location is not on the end of the exploration in the river - but preliminary in the path.
3-It is an image from the times but in the access trail of the 14km tradewinds trail were i camped.
4-The image scope is narrow and not of the whole river.
5-It is some details i capture to document how the forest or river was like in fine detail.
6-It was when the river was  flooded - but in the upper parts it just turns muddy.
7-It is one of a few in El Verde (the Green) in the road where the larger river crosses the 186 road.
8-It is an image of my sons enjoying these rivers in El Verde or PR 186 in El Yunque.
9-It is a detail about common plants and trees - yagrumo, sierra palms etc.
