Note: The rivers waters here are brownish - it was the day after a major flooding
in the river where the water turns brown. These rivers have substantial organic
matter decomposition too.
You get here via the Rio Sabana trail, after about 3 hours up, then one
crosses the river once, and then arrives at a very muddy section - a swamp - were we
see this interesting section of the upper river where it is flat and sandy for a while.
Some Sierra Palms and trees trunks we see on images were demolished by Hurricane
Maria 140 mph winds in 2017. So we see many trunks and trees bent, broken or on
the ground. Basically the forest was demolished by Maria and took over 1 year to recover.
The forest is quite open and receives a lot more light than before in the ground, since
Maria destroyed the canopy. The rain level in this forest is incredible - over 180 inches
per year. I have been in places where every day, all the time, humidity was 99%.
Here is much the same.
